Second Grade

Second grade is a pivotal year as students begin to shape their identities as readers and use a variety of texts and resources to understand the world around them. Through coursework tailored to meet the needs of each student, they will explore various topics and communicate their thoughts and opinions in new ways throughout the year.

Learning Highlights
  • Second graders team up with older students to practice their reading skills through our Reading Buddy program.

  • Students participate in a field trip to Pike Place Market to witness economic principles in action.

  • As part of our technology progression, students use programs like Seesaw, IXL, and Epic to find resources, practice skills, and create projects online.

  • Second graders who are ready for extension opportunities “walk” to math with our 3rd graders.

Curriculum Overview

Literacy

  • Second grade students transition from learning to read to reading to learn!  We use the Superkids program to practice foundational skills and reading fluency while engaging in literacy centers to read and comprehend texts.

  • Second graders move through a variety of writing projects beginning with an autobiography and ending with a biography. They write opinions, poetry, and imaginary stories.

Math

  • Second grade math is all about 2 and 3 digit addition and subtraction. When we are not regrouping place values, we are counting coins, telling time to the nearest minute, and using data to create graphs.

Social Studies

  • Students move through three units: Culture and Communities, Economics, and History. Second graders learn about citizenship and democracy, historical figures who have shaped our world, different cultures, and special holidays.

Science

  • Our three science units are Pebbles, Sand, and Silt, Properties of Matter, and Plants and Insects. We study erosion and landforms in Earth Science. We look at solids, liquids and gasses, and we observe the life cycle of a mealworm.

Religion

  • Students cover topics such as Revelation & the Trinity, Jesus Christ & the Church, Morality, and the Sacraments. We pay special attention to the Sacraments of Penance and Reconciliation and Eucharist as they pertain to second graders.
